Description: Florence Lawrence (1886-1938)was the first film player whose name was used to promote her films and the studio for which she worked.Before her,actors and actresses worked anonymously,partly out of fear that stage managers would refuse to hire them if they were found to be working in films and partly because movie executives didn't want to put much money into the production of these short,practically disposable films,and didn't want their players to become well known and start demanding higher salaries. Lawrence was on the stage from age three.About 1910,she made the 1st personal appearance of a film star in St. Louis and the resulting publicity made her famous. After a stage accident in which she injured her back,she retired from films,only to be lured back in 1916 for her first feature.It was unsuccessful. She tried a comeback again in 1921;that, too,was unsuccessful.She settled into bit parts and character roles through the 1920s and 1930s.She committed suicide in 1938 after years of unhappiness and illness.

Description: Ruth Chatterton (in 1912) (1892-1961)She was a dignified, sophisticated, brittle, blonde leading lady. At age 12, she debuted on stage in a stock production, reached Broadway by age 18, then triumphed at 20 as the star of Daddy Long Legs. She didn't break into films until her mid-30s, starting with Sins of the Fathers (1928). She was subsequently nominated for "Best Actress" Oscars for her work in Madame X (1929) and Sarah and Son (1930), but is perhaps best remembered as Walter Huston's spoiled, selfish wife in Dodsworth (1936), after the making of which she left Hollywood. She went on to appear in two British productions, then retired from the screen. She continued a successful and variety-filled career on the stage, once directing a play but more usually starring in Broadway productions. She authored a Broadway play as well as several novels in the '50s. Chatterton was also a licensed pilot who flew her own plane cross-country. She was married three times, each time to an actor.

Throughout the 1910s and into the early 1920s, Anita Stewart was one of the silent screen's most popular actresses and was often paired in romantic roles with real-life husband, actor Rudolph Cameron.

Description: Olive Thomas(1894-1920) was born in Pennsylvania.All in all,not an exotic place to be.She spent her uneventful childhood in school,until she dropped out and married at the age of 16.He was evidently not an ideal husband - they divorced after two years, and Olive fled to New York in hopes of a better life.Thomas met actor Jack Pickford, brother of one of the most powerful silent stars Mary Pickford.Thomas eloped with Pickford in1916 in New Jersey.None of their family was present��When we arrived in Paris her only thought was that she had to buy some dresses and then get back home to complete her picture contracts so that we could settle down to have a home and babies."They went to London to buy some clothes and arrived back in Paris-Thomas took a large quantity of mercury bichloride which was prescribed to Pickford for his venereal disease and which he had also passed on to Thomas.Pickford's doctor had admitted to prescribing the medicine for Pickford in 1917 as a treatment for syphillis.

Description: Olive Thomas(1894-1920):She was a flower too quickly fading � Paris 1920:�The American "movie" star,died yesterday morning at the American Hospital at Neuilly-sur-Seine,after 5 days of terrible suffering,as the result of swallowing a large quantity of a medicinal preparation containing corrosive sublimate.Her husband denies that there was any attempt at suicide.�She was 26 years old.About her death:they returned to the Hotel Ritz around 3:00 a.m.It was rumored that she may have taken cocaine that night though it was never proven.An intoxicated and tired Thomas accidentally ingested a large dose of the medicine.She had either thought the flask contained drinking water or sleeping pills;accounts vary.The label was in French which may have added to the confusion.She screamed,"Oh, my God!",and Pickford ran to pick her up in his arms.However,it was too late;the dose was lethal (a large dose of a mercury bichloride liquid solution prescribed for her husband's chronic syphilis)

Description: Alice Liddell was Charles Dodgson�s favourite �girlfriend�.She was also his main inspiration for the stories "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass".Dodgson (the real name of Lewis Carroll � 1832/1898 � Teacher in Mathematics in Oxford) told her many stories,and the Wonderland story was one of the tales he invented to amuse her and her sisters.Alice,Lorina and Edith visited Dodgson regularly, and Dodgson formed a strong friendship with them,but his relation with Mrs. Liddell and the Dean was not very heartily.By the latter part of 1856 Mrs.Liddell had asked Dodgson not to take anymore photographs,and he understood that he was intruding too much.But when the Liddell�s went on a vacation and left the children in the care of their governess,she let Dodgson visit the children again,and this continued when their parents returned�etc.She was 26 years old and she was about 7�Some might ask questions ...I do not want to approach this.

Description: Elsa Lanchester (1902-1986)was born in Lewisham,London.Her parents were considered Bohemian,and refused to legalise their union in any conventional way to satisfy the era's conservative society. She studied dance as a child and after the 1st WW she began performing in theatre and cabaret,where she established her career over the following decade.She met the actor Charles Laughton in 1927,and they were married two years later.She began playing small roles in British films.The success of her husband in American films resulted in the couple moving to Hollywood,where she played small film roles.Laughton was by now making films in Hollywood so she joined him there,making minor appearances in David Copperfield (1935) and Naughty Marietta (1935).These and her appearances in British films helped her gain the title role in Bride of Frankenstein (1935),the film for which she is now best remembered. The horror film Willard (1971) was highly successful and one of her last roles was in Murder By Death(1976).
